The People Behind the Patio

The internet is flooded with generic advice about outdoor living. Most of it is written by content marketers who have never poured a concrete slab, navigated an HOA approval for a gabled roof, or dealt with the drainage nightmare of a zero-lot-line property.

We built this site differently. We’re practitioners, visual strategists, and build researchers. We focus entirely on right-sized living for an outdoor-centric lifestyle.

The friction of turning a tight courtyard into a functional, year-round space requires actual field experience. You can’t fake that knowledge. We don’t try to.

Meet the Core Team

Farid Indra Gunawan, Visual Strategy Partner & Lead Editor

Farid brings years of operational experience in real estate visual strategy to Homes Patio. He knows exactly how a patio home translates from architectural plans to daily reality.

During his time working alongside developers and real estate professionals, Farid noticed a massive disconnect. Buyers tour garden homes and focus entirely on the cosmetic finishes. They ignore the structural realities. Farid built his career on exposing the gap between a builder’s rendering and a homeowner’s reality.

He understands spatial flow. He knows that a patio home lives or dies by its sightlines. When you sit in a tight courtyard, your eye needs somewhere to go. He teaches our readers how to plan those sightlines before they pour a single yard of concrete.

He asks the hard questions. He forces buyers to look past the staging furniture. He demands they ask about insulation ratings, window performance, and the actual energy upgrades required to make a sunroom livable in August. When he writes about adding a gabled roof to a back patio, he breaks down the load-bearing requirements and the visual weight of the structure.

Elena Rostova, Build & Materials Researcher

Elena tracks the physical degradation of outdoor materials. She spent four years working directly for a regional hardscaping supplier before joining our editorial team. She knows exactly why stamped concrete fails in freeze-thaw cycles and why cheap composite decking warps under direct afternoon sun.

She covers the unglamorous side of patio additions. Costs. Timelines. Contractor vetting.

Elena knows that a quote for a new outdoor living space is only as good as the materials specified in the contract. If a contractor suggests a cheap substitute for base rock, she tells you exactly how that will cause your pavers to sink after the first heavy rain. If a material claims to be maintenance-free, Elena finds the hidden catch.

Marcus Thorne, Landscape & Drainage Specialist

Marcus fixes the mistakes people make when they ignore grading. He operates a boutique landscape design firm specializing in high-density courtyard homes. He understands the micro-climates created by brick courtyard walls. They act as massive heat sinks, baking delicate plants and trapping stagnant water.

He writes about the friction of moving water away from a slab foundation when you only have six feet of clearance to the property line.

No theory. Just dirt, slope, and PVC pipe.

Our Editorial Standards

We reject the noise. We don’t publish generic listicles about patio furniture. Every piece of content published on Homes Patio goes through a strict vetting process designed to filter out theoretical fluff.

We hold our team to three absolute rules.

  • Real-world anchoring. We name specific materials, actual costs, and realistic timelines. If we discuss building a courtyard wall, we detail the footing requirements.
  • No pay-to-play. We reject sponsored product placements. If we recommend a specific brand of patio paver, it’s because we watched it survive three harsh winters.
  • Acknowledging the downsides. Every design choice has a penalty. We tell you what it is. A gabled roof looks great, but it traps heat if you skip the ridge vent. We illuminate the blind spots.

We don’t accept guest posts from marketing agencies.

If an article carries our name, it means we did the research, verified the claims, and stand behind the advice. Building codes evolve and materials change. We revisit our guides constantly to ensure the specifications hold up to current practice.

Connect With the Team

We want to hear about your actual build problems. Are you fighting a contractor over a roof pitch? Did your HOA reject your courtyard expansion? Are you trying to figure out if a garden home is actually the right downsizing move for your family?

Tell us. We read every email.

Send your questions, project photos, or contractor disputes to our editorial desk at [email protected]. We typically respond within 48 hours. If your question highlights a common blind spot in patio home construction, we will turn it into a dedicated guide.
